Plaster in architecture
Plaster as a material for architectural detailing has never been surpassed.. From the
pyramids to the finest homes in Europe, plaster has a legacy of beauty and function that
no other material has been able to substitute :
- Plaster does not shrink or warp as does wood
- When installed it requires no caulking or future maintenance
(re-caulking)
- Plaster is basically gypsum rock therefore non combustible and non edible
by anything living
- Plaster detailing when properly manufactured is stunningly sharp and can
incorporate an infinite variety of relief work or shapes
- When walls are not linear, plaster is a great material for flexing,
cutting and plastering to give a beautiful finish
- Plaster ranges in hardness from soft to almost marble like hardness. The
hard plaster is extremely durable to scratches and resistance to knocks and bashes.
- Plaster is easy to repair if scratched or chipped
- It is environmentally friendly. It is simply gypsum rock, a perfectly
natural material if disposed and no forests are cut in its manufacture.
Materials
Pre-cast fibrous plaster products are produced in different strengths and reinforcements
depending on product. For example mantels and columns are made of hard, more dense and
therefore heavier plaster (for chip resistance) than cornice moldings which are lighter.
The backing can vary between sisal, jute, fibreglass and lath depending on the product.
Restoration, Renovation and Custom work We create originals in plaster,
clay, wood or using composition for reproduction in plaster for any style or period.
We duplicate or re-create from samples, drawings or pictures when
reproduction of a damaged piece is required.
Application
Plaster products may be applied to any surface of plaster or drywall using premixed
drywall compounds, polyfilla or durabond 90. Large pieces may require holes to be drilled,
countersunk, then filled with drywall compounds or plaster and sanded for a fine finish.
When using drywall compound, adding a 50% mix of durabond or polyfilla will help in
reducing the compound from shrinking as well as allow it to set up within an hour or so
(depending on amount added and temperature). Always use clean cold water and add powder to
the water (not water to powder). |
